The European Broadband Portal

Project type: Portals - Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007
Customer: eris@ - European Council

The challenge

Stemming from a conference held by the European Commission in May 2007 in Brussels, it was determined that information regarding the broadband market needed to be publicized and foster the exchange of related proper procedures, with the objective of bridging the gap between rural areas and other parts of the Union.

With such an objective in mind, forming part of a wide range of measures spread over a 3-year project, the creation of a web portal was commissioned to support this exchange of information.

The premise of this portal included having an effective design, a significantly rapid development and roll-out period, and content tracking and dynamics.

What is more, the portal had to be A-level accessible on all its content presentation pages, as well as having an automatic translation tool in real time so that all the information forms input by the user in their native languages would also be published in English.

The solution

Spenta Consulting carried out the entire project from start to finish, including requirement analyses, system architecture, graphic and technical design, and the implementation and roll-out in servers outsourced to a specialized hosting company.

Particular importance was paid to a market study concerning on-line translation tools, given the fact that languages such as Polish were not available in most pre-existing tools.

The solution consisted in building a portal with Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) and MS SQL Server 2005 using WebServices to handle requests for the automatic translation tools.

The entire project cycle, from the first meeting to the launch day, including a rigorous month-long revision phase, took place over a period of exactly 5 months.
